A Drink of Living Water

But those who drink the water I give will never be thirsty again. It becomes a fresh, bubbling spring within them, giving them eternal life (John 4:14, NLT).
One of the things I’ve come to look forward to each year is filling my window boxes with beautiful flowers. The first year I planted anything in the window boxes, I didn’t necessarily hold up my end of the bargain, though. The flowers need plenty of water in order to flourish. I am getting better, but, admittedly, I don’t always give them a drink as often as they need.
This past July and August were much wetter than usual, so my plants weren’t quite as reliant on me for their water supply. As a result, this girl got a little lazy. One afternoon I sent a picture text to a friend, and I noticed my potted plant in the background. The leaves were wilting, the blooms falling off, and it was in desperate need of a drink of water. I promptly found my watering can and gave them a hearty drink.
I returned to the front of the house about thirty minutes later to pull some weeds, and I found that my potted plant already looked so much better! The leaves had perked up, and the blooms looked beautiful again.
I began to think about the condition of my own heart and soul. Have I given myself enough water lately? I’m not talking about the hydration level of my physical body, but rather living water and the hydration level of my spiritual soul. After some reflection, I realized that I had not been going daily to the well that provides what my heart needs to survive in the elements of this world.
My flowers need water to survive the heat and humidity of a Kentucky summer, but my heart and soul need a daily drink from the well of living water in order to survive the sinful behavior that dominates this world.
I am a sinner. I struggle with temptation, my words don’t always honor the Lord, I get frustrated easily, I lose my patience, and the list goes on. My sinful soul craves a drink of living water because without it, my life becomes overwhelmed with the sin and brokenness of my own heart and of this world.
Jesus is the ultimate nourisher. Turning daily to the true, living Word of God is the only way to prevent the wilting of our souls. Found in John 4:14 is scriptural evidence of this truth: “But those who drink the water I give will never be thirsty again. It becomes a fresh, bubbling spring within them, giving them eternal life.”
When we fill ourselves with the Word of God, we are providing nourishment that our souls receive in no other way. So often, we try to find that nourishment in our relationships, our hobbies, our children, or our successes, but none of those things compare to Jesus.
I am glad I noticed the plant when I did because had I waited much longer, it may not have bounced back so quickly or even survived. Thankfully, our souls are not the same. I am so thankful for this free gift of living water that provides nourishment to our souls for eternity.
No matter what you’ve done or what’s been done to you, it’s never too late to start drinking the living water that only Jesus provides.
