A Firm Foundation

Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock (Matthew 7:24-25, NIV).

Have you ever played Jenga? It’s a fun party game that challenges players to remove blocks from a solid foundation, one at a time, and add it back to the top of the stack.

The first few rounds are pretty easy, but as you progress through the game, the foundation of the stack gradually becomes more unstable.

You must see the whole stack, and target the most stable area or the loosest block before you make your move. Often, you can see the stack start to waver before it comes tumbling down to signal the end of the game.

Has your own life ever felt that way? Physically, spiritually, mentally, emotionally, or maybe a combination of all of them. You feel like you’ve established a solid foundation, but as life progresses, things can begin to feel shaky, and suddenly, it’s like everything falls apart around you.

Despite our best efforts to see the whole picture, and be intentional in moving the pieces we feel confident God is calling us to move, things still topple over, and we’re left cleaning up the mess.

Maybe it’s a relationship that ended suddenly.

Maybe you moved cross country for a job then the company announces massive layoffs.

Maybe you have just enough to make ends meet for the month, and the heat goes out at home.

Maybe you receive a diagnosis that alters the plans you had for yourself, or your family.

But God. May we remind ourselves of the truth found in Matthew 7:24-25: “Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock.”

If we build our lives on Jesus, the rock, He is our firm foundation. Storms will come. Winds will blow. The roof may get blown off. The bricks may get blasted. Shingles might go flying. But our foundation, if we choose to say yes to a personal relationship with Jesus, will always remain, despite the storm.

P.S. One more tidbit about Jenga. Even when the pieces fall and the game is over, isn’t there always one piece that remains in place where it started? Yes! It’s always a piece that remained on the stable foundation of the floor where it was at the beginning of the game. No matter what storms come, keep yourself grounded and rooted in the firm foundation of Jesus Christ.
