Community in Christ

For where two or three are gathered in my name, I am there among them (Matthew 18:20, CSB).
I joined a women’s Bible study in January. It has been really good for my soul to gather with this group over the last couple of months, and I find myself looking forward to Thursday evenings.
I could tell you all about the study we are in, how eye-opening the material has been, and how it has re-shaped the way I view the Bible. But honestly, I don’t think that is what matters most.
As we stepped into 2024, I had so many conversations with women whose hearts were seeking community, and belonging. To be part of a group that seeks Jesus while celebrating one another as daughters of the King has been one of the biggest gifts of the year for me so far.
What does the word community mean to you? Here are a few words that immediately come to mind for me: connectedness, belonging, gathering, shared values, tight-knit, and intentional.
There are many more. If you look up the definition of community on Google, you’ll get close to ten different definitions from the Oxford language dictionary, but this one is my favorite:
“a feeling of fellowship with others, as a result of sharing common attitudes, interests, and goals. “the sense of community that organized religion can provide”1
a similarity or identity. “writers who shared a community of interests”1
I love the use of the word fellowship. It is not just about the gathering, but the communing that takes place when you gather with others who, as the definition says, have a similarity of identity.
When I think about the group of women in my Bible study, I am grateful that, although we are all of different ages, stages of life, and backgrounds, we all identify as daughters of the King.
We are not exclusive, and would welcome anyone that is curious about Jesus and the life He offers, but our shared foundational beliefs provides the lens through which we process things together. It has been such a gift, and it helps grow my heart closer to Jesus each week.
Would you join me this week in praying to have community in your life? We all have different levels of margin in our lives, but there is great value in intentionally carving out time for Jesus.
It could be a weekly Bible study, but maybe it’s something as simple as an intentional weekly phone call with a friend, or the 15 minutes connecting before and after church on Sunday.
Whatever it might look like for you, may we all remember the words found in Matthew 18:20: For where two or three are gathered in my name, I am there among them.
