'Tis the Season

As long as the earth endures, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, day and night will never cease (Genesis 8:22, NIV).
We started the month of December with a bang as the first snow of the season arrived overnight. Waking to the sight of snow on the ground was quite beautiful! At least until I stepped onto my porch that morning, and was greeted by the icy temperatures. If I’m this cold at 38, how am I going to feel at 68? All my patients at physical therapy tell me the cold just gets colder.
As crazy as it sounds to someone like me that is very cold natured, I actually have several friends who love the cold! One likes to run in this weather. The other enjoys sitting on her back patio in short sleeves while snow is on the ground. I cannot imagine!
My point is this: seasons change whether we like it or not. I sometimes complain about the cold, but honestly, I am grateful to live in a place where we experience all four seasons. Change has always been a part of God’s plan, from the beginning of creation. Genesis 8:22 says:
“As long as the earth endures, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, day and night will never cease.”
I’m so thankful for the Word of God. When my mind wanders, my heart aches, or my mouth complains, I know where I need to go. When I flip through the pages of the Bible, and spend time with Jesus, He centers me on the only truth that matters. Genesis 8 fills me with comfort and delight, because even when I don’t particularly love the change of season, I am reminded that God is in control, and this has been a central part of God’s plan since Creation.
We’re only a few weeks away from Christmas (and my birthday…shout out to all my close-to-Christmas birthday friends!), so the cold weather is here to stay. Instead of complaining about the cold, I’m going to do my best to fix my focus on all the things I’m grateful for:
Winter clothing that keeps me warm.
A heated home that I can control the temperature of.
Enough money to put gas in my vehicle so I don’t have to walk places.
A heating pad that warms my chair.
Fuzzy socks that I can wear in my boots to keep my feet warm.
Hot coffee that warms my hands and my belly.
Sweet friendships that warm my heart during a season that can be difficult for so many.
I’m not sure how you feel about the cold, winter months. I’m not sure if you’re a Christmas lover, a Grinch, or someone who simply struggles with the holidays. But one thing I know for sure: God sees your heart, He hears your cries, and He wants to remind you today that nothing is a surprise to Him. No matter what season you’re walking through, we can choose to say “‘Tis the Season,” simply because we know God is in control.
