When the Words Don’t Come

So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live your lives in him, rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness (Colossians 2: 6-7, NIV).
Sometimes the words don’t come. I want them to, but they just don’t. And during those times, I just have to sit with the silence and ask the Lord what He wants me to hear.
I have been, am, and most likely always will be, an external processor. I often talk aloud to the Lord in prayer, and conversation to process the thoughts of my mind, and heart. But over time, especially as I get older, I am beginning to find value in the silence. Quiet prayer. Reflection. Learning to lean into the way the Lord speaks to my heart when I don’t have words, questions, or thoughts to process. For me, it’s often in the quiet that the enemy attacks with lies meant to create confusion and chaos.
The tendency is to run from this space. But I’m learning to stay planted. It isn’t always easy, but when I allow myself to be rooted and built up in Him, I am finding the outcome is worth the fight. Learning to let myself sit with Jesus in the quiet is a discipline that has led to growth, healing, and an increase in spiritual maturity in my life.
This doesn’t mean attacking thoughts from the enemy never come. Rather, it means I am learning to focus on the truth of God’s word, and the comforting presence of the Holy Spirit as it fills the silent space. When I do this, I am reminded that I am loved unconditionally by the God of the Universe.
In all its flaws and brokenness, He knows my heart most intimately, and He chooses me anyway. He feels that way about you, too. May you find time today, and everyday, to sit with Jesus in the silence, and allow Him to strengthen your faith as you remain rooted in Christ.
